In today's diverse classrooms, even the most carefully planned lessons may leave some learners struggling to participate.
In these instances, teachers may need to create on-the-fly adaptations to
ensure that all students are included and supported. In this presentation, Dr. Kluth will illustrate alternatives to this retrofit approach to curriculum and instruction by discussing the benefits of Universal Design for Learning. Specifically, she will outline and give examples of UDL methods (engagement strategies, action & expression strategies, and representation strategies) and emphasize how UDL can help teachers reach a wider range of students and include those individuals who may previously have been excluded. Come to learn more about the "why" and "how" of UDL and stay for a story about fanny packs, an architecture metaphor, and a few UDL hacks you can use immediately.
