Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for Autistic Children

AUDIENCE: Educators and clinicians who are interested in learning how to support students who use or may benefit from AAC

This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and its application for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The presentation will focus on defining, describing and exploring AAC, focusing on its role in facilitating communication for those with complex communication profiles. The session will explore how characteristics of ASD impact the implementation and effectiveness of various AAC systems, providing insights into tailoring interventions to individual needs. Key foundational skills for successful use of high-tech speech-generating devices (SGDs) will be identified, alongside an overview of SGDs and their funding mechanisms in Ontario, Canada.

Further, the session will present practical strategies for integrating SGDs within classroom settings to enhance learning and communication. Participants will also learn about teaching techniques rooted in applied behaviour analysis and communication sciences best practices related to supporting the transition from using image-based communication to developing sight word vocabulary. Additionally, strategies to use audio time delays effectively to encourage vocal speech will be discussed. This training aims to equip educators and practitioners with the knowledge and tools necessary to support individuals using AAC, ultimately improving communication outcomes and educational experiences for students with ASD.
